New work digs!

We moved offices recently from Bulimba and we're now in new digs in swanky Teneriffe. Smack bang between James Street and Skyring Terrace, I've had to start bringing my lunch so I'm not tempted by a) the amazing cafes and bistros in the area and b) the shopping. Ohhhh the shopping! Magnolia Interiors, Space, Emporium, Mimco...I'm in so much trouble.

I distract myself (and my purse) by walking around the area and just appreciating the architecture and history.

10 Weeks!

Pfffft....no I'm not pregnant!! It's been 10 weeks since we moved into our newly built home! I guess that's a birth of some sort.

We're out of our teething phase and settling in nicely. We are so completely in love with our new place and slowly but surely adding the touches that make it 'home sweet home'. Actually, it's more like 'home permanent home'.

Here's some pics. Enjoy!

The 14 year old

More and more often I find myself looking at my 14 year old and wondering where the time has gone. It's so cliched but one minute he was baby wrapped in a snowsuit rolling around in the ice and today he's just 1 inch under 6 foot tall and I have to ask him to get the glasses down out of the top cupboard.

He's a typical teenager and drives me batty a LOT of the time, but when he does I try to take a deep breath and try and be grateful for the bigger picture.

He does all the things that a typical teenager would do - he tries to get out of his 9.30pm bedtime EVERY night, tries to sneak his mobile phone into his bedroom (the 'no electronics zone'), leaves his clothes on the floor and forgets to bring the rubbish bins in...every single week!

But he also still gives me a kiss goodbye when I drop him off at school, has empathy for kids at school that are having a hard time, has respect (to a degree) for the environment and "generally" does what he's asked without any backchat or rudeness. (When he does though, the wireless password gets changed and the XBox is banned, I usually get an apology pretty quick.)

So I guess it's not all that bad. He's away this weekend. I will miss him.

Freestyle Tapas

Creme Brûlée
A massive shout out to dessert icon Freestyle Tout at Emporium. My Mum bought one of those Scoopon deals for "all you can eat tapas" months ago and we've been so busy we just haven't had time to use it.

I called a couple of weeks before it was due to expire and there was only a few reservation spots available and most were weekday lunchtimes. I totally would have understood if they said too bad so sad, but they were awesome and said that because so many people had left it so late, they were extending the validity period for another 2 weeks.

Pannacotta (foreground) and the pavlova (background)

I've had a few of these all-you-can-eat deals and while they seem great, they always seem to take ages to bring out each round, so your time runs out before you get to capacity. The deal here was for 6 and the conditions were that the first round was one dish each (6) and then 3 dishes each round after and each had to be finished before the next one was ordered.

With over half of us there Chinese (and Jansen, human eating machine) I wondered how slow the service might be and whether we'd get (Mum's) money's worth.

I needn't have worried. The session was for 90 minutes and the wait staff would take our next round orders as they were clearing away plates so there was very little wait between courses. In fact, the service was so quick we called time with 15 minutes to go...all of us were stuffed.

Disclaimer - none of divine dishes pictured were of the tapas, these were the desserts we had there afterwards. We were so busy enjoying the tapas that no-one, not even me, bothered to take photos. But if you can use your imagination, think potato bravas, marinated olives, barramundi and leek croquettes and Mooloolaba prawns.

Fantastic night and kudos to Freestyle, their food and all their amazing staff!

A day out on Moreton Bay...

I've been wanting to go and see the Tangalooma Wrecks for ages! I find shipwrecks fascinating and haunting...even though these ones were deliberately scuttled.

Sooo lucky for us that Jansen's just bought a new boat and captained us out to Moreton Bay for the day. The water was aqua blue but pretty choppy, so it was a pretty rough ride...no sea sickness though, just like being on a ride at the Ekka.

I would love to dive in the wrecks. It was too rough that day and we didn't have the gear. Next time.

Men are from Mars..

I've decided you can tell the difference between men and women from the way they attend weddings.

So Jansen and I went to a wedding the other day. In the weeks, let's say almost 7 weeks, leading up to the wedding, I pored over shopping sites to find something to wear, finally narrowing it down to two dresses on ASOS.  I couldn't decide which one and neither could the girls in the office from the poll I held which came out at 50/50. So I bought both. (Love the ASOS return policy). I had a fashion parade in the lunch room of the office and we had a unanimous winner.

For the wedding itself I had my eyelashes done, my hair done and I probably would have popped down to the salon for a wax if I'd had time. All up, I was prepared.

HE, on the other hand, went to work in the morning (on a building site), went out to lunch (with the groom, no less), then decided to go a massage that finished 40 minutes before we were due to arrive. He got out of the shower and said, "What should I wear?" And then, "Oh, my good shoes got trashed at the last wedding, could I wear my RM Williams boots?"

The thing was...he was the BEST MAN!!

I was just the plus one.

Lucky there was just enough time to get some Kiwi shoe polish at the 7-Eleven or we might have ended up going like this!!

Probably wouldn't have matter. No one would have noticed, cause the bride was absolutely radiant, the food was divine and the view across the Brisbane River from the Stokehouse was gorgeous.
