Boggo Road Gaol Tour

Um, I love old buildings and historical places. I'm not ashamed to admit it. Did a tour of the Boggo Road Gaol here in Brissie with some friends one weekend. It was pretty cool.

The front gates

So here's a bit of a history lesson folks. Boggo Road Gaol is practically in the city, only about two kilometres away from the CBD. It was built in 1883 and it honestly looked like nothing much had changed since then. The cells were cold concrete with just a mattress and none of this mechanical bars no siree, these were the old-style, padlocked type.

I've lived in Brisbane since 1994 with a five year stint away in Melbourne and Sydney and I was ASTOUNDED to learn that the gaol was still being used up until 2002. I look at the modern jails (that's how we spell it these days) and they have all the mod cons and at least heating, airconditioning and toilets. Ye-huh. No toilets for these cells, you had to wait until a certain time and up until (I think) the 1960s, the toilet block didn't even have doors. Crazy. It would have been hard times in there, especially in Winter.

Art inside the cells
They also held executions here. It's cold and spooky and I couldn't imagine how freaky it would be here at night. Although…they have night tours! I'd totally be into that.

Soup…yeah!

My Mum sent me a soup maker. (She sends some random stuff sometimes.) It's pretty awesome -chuck all the veggies in, pour in some stock, turn it on and walk away. Twenty minutes later it's cooked, blended and ready to eat.

Yesterday was cold and drizzly. We had pumpkin soup. It was goooood.

Can't remember when the last foodie catch up was with the girls but it's definitely been a while. Miranda picks the best places and we had an awesome degustation at The Foraging Quail.

148 Merthyr Road, New Farm

Tofu and broadbeans

Heirloom tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella,
samphire and tonka bean

Artichoke Pannacotta, Jerusalem artichoke

Chocolate Forest Seven Textures of Chocolate with Orange Marshmallow, Strawberry and Meringue

Chef Minh Le waaay in the background

The staff were sooooo friendly and the chef was so sweet and accommodating. Normally everyone has to have the same choices for the degustation but he did a separate vego selection for me. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The Color Run (Yes that's how they spell it)

Did the Swisse Color Run with my little brother. Ridiculously good fun!!!! Get dressed in white and at various times during the course, people drench you with powdered food dye. Then at the end you get your own packet of dye and drench other people in a rainbow coloured food festival and party with a unicorn.

So much fun and great to hang out with my little bro.
